When we set out on this project, we set ourselves an aggressive goal of 5,000 read-to-me books to be distributed to families with the gracious help of The National Diaper Bank Network and their fantastic distribution allies. This winter, our worldwide Fanthropy Running Clubs community is focusing our Direct Impact Project (DIP) on the importance of early brain and language development through the power of reading books to young children from birth. We’re going to collect new picture and board books for young children (target ages 1 to 5) for delivery to multiple facilities that will put them into the hands of those who need them most. A 2019 study led by St. Louis University researchers found 36 percent of people who menstruate missed days of work due to a lack of adequate period supplies. It also found 21 percent of low-income individuals surveyed couldn’t buy those needed products on a monthly basis…nearly half of them had to choose between buying food or period-related products. That study was conducted before the global pandemic led to lockdowns, closed businesses, rising unemployment, and decreased availability of retail goods. […]
